Old Riga Romanticism

The latest handmade empty book, b(r)ought from Old Riga in August 2020. My little brother went there, and had to go through some trouble to find this beauty. The book reminds me of my first one, also purchased in August, when the tide changed in the beginning of another thousand years. I paid for it all, with interest and everything. Little brother told me there were not that many of these books anymore, so this may be another culture form waning. Hopefully not altogether, because the benefits of handwriting are too dear to be lost. Picture was kindly taken by Mihaela M.

I have a biblical number of books already, and I have decided that it is enough. I am no longer searching or waiting for another. The whole idea has been and still is to let this kind of working flourish again. Please, give your friends and relatives a gift to remember, or keep it to yourself. I assure you that the lines will never be wasted, if you begin to write notes like these. It may offer you a different kind of tone or landscape to reflect upon, instead of and besides the daily screens that have become necessary evil in our time. This handwriting cult is one of the main themes in my work as an artist, and as it has taken two decades to reach this point, I am looking for more readers and stages to....

Of Love and Grand Mothers

Basel, the city of alchemy and humanism, in February 2020. Photos by Antti Filppu. I visited there shortly before the world changed and went under lockdown. For years I had not been anywhere, and even this little journey had been cancelled many times already. I wanted to have some of that good old perspective of a real tourist again. For various and quite obvious reasons, actually. Northern Switzerland has become familiar to me during the last decade and a half. I have been a few times to Dornach since 2008, but never had the chance to really see Basel itself. Was I destroying whatever little remains of my reputation there may have been left, with this ever-flowing talk of one and the same thing (I will not mention it now). Something else was needed here, for my old f(r)iends and all strangers, too. And if I was annoying, please just let it go by. I have been honest and searching for the truth, like most of you?

Anyway, now I have learned that love and grandmothers indeed make the world go around. And I saw "pictures of naked ladies" hanging on the wall, though not quite like Blackie Lawless himself. I went to Fondation Beyeler to see Claude Monet's water lilies, but the line was too long and winding. So I took a walk in the garden and found a free exhibition at the Kunst Raum Riehen. I decided to give it a try. There were Jenny Rova's beautiful features all over the place. I was moved when I came out of there. In the age of hard porn a few nude pictures don't really mean anything at all. But there was love and romance in those photos, and the surroundings were somehow resembling the ones I have come to know. I was really touched by the exhibition.

About the grandmothers, I accidentally met a few older ladies during the weekend. We had conversations (in a tram and the hallway of an auditorium) that were meaningful and gave me a sense of purpose. I have always loved and believed in the grand mothers, for their human and warm-hearted wisdom. Somehow there is an endless wiseguy talk (of hate and despise) in this world. And it has been growing everywhere for years. The care of our elders has been questioned, and it works in both ways. We take care of them, and there is a kind of hidden flow of "something higher" given to us in return. This is how it has always been, although the ways differ. The ideal is the same. We need their thoughts and prayers more than we know.

Encouraged by this lady in a tram, I met Nietzsche once more. And following my own lines of work, I found Paracelsus in his old home, known as the Pharmaceutical museum. Not to mention Hermann Hesse, I stayed two nights in Hotel Krafft, where The Steppenwolf was written. For various and quite obvious reasons, to repeat myself again. There were many others, too. I had raclette and bought a few books. Even this poor little journey would not have been made without my beloved grandmother.

Ukko-Kolin huipulla tuulee

Ukko-Koli Juhannuksena 2019.

On vapautta kuunnella metsän huminoita
Kun aamuinen aurinko kultaa kallioita
Ja elää elämäänsä, ja elää elämäänsä
On vapautta valvoa kesäisiä öitä
Ja katsella hiljaisen haavan värinöitä
Ja elää elämäänsä, ja elää elämäänsä
Maailma on kaunis ja hyvä elää sille
Jolla on aikaa ja tilaa unelmille
Ja mielen vapaus, ja mielen vapaus
On vapautta istua iltaa yksinänsä
Ja tuntea tutkia omaa sisintänsä
Ja elää elämäänsä, ja elää elämäänsä
On vapautta vaistota viesti suuremmasta
Ja olla kuin kaikua aina jatkuvasta
Ja elää elämäänsä, ja elää elämäänsä
Maailma on kaunis ja hyvä elää sille
Jolla on aikaa ja tilaa unelmille
Ja mielen vapaus, ja mielen vapaus

A meeting place of lovers

The end of July in 2016, captured by Laura Vilva. The place is called Sigvartsby, an old village near Hamina, where my parents live and where I spent my early youth in misery and pain. This picture tries to speak. It is the Master of the Mandolin, Tomi Pekkola, on the right. I am next to him, and we are playing Love itself or maybe Suzanne, on a garden party. My little sister Laura is on the left with my daughter.

One theme could be the bed where I had my first kiss of love. The room has a view over this garden and the apple trees. But it's not what I want to tell now. My little brother, who was born the next morning (in May 1995), told me a story about KISS. Paul Stanley said in an interview that sometimes the musing and the atmosphere seem to be at odds with the reality. A good song could be written on a thin story. The muse may be someone who only exchanges a few words with the poet, or just a glance. Neither does this mean that a poet who writes the song is caught up in it (although it could happen).

This was my little brother's response to my whining. I had told him about my guitar, how it was named after St. Anne. There is also a Lady of Romance, as a memory of the ballad of a young man that happened to receive another verse or three. In the beginning of 2010 I was finishing my old collection of poetry (Flor & Blancheflor), and walked the streets of Helsinki when someone passed me by. I thought she may have been the dancer nymph mentioned in The Thin Young Men. I sent her a letter, telling about the poem and her initials in the notes. Though she did not respond, I'd soon receive two alternative verses for Suzanne, a part of the poem called Beautiful (detached from the original TYM) and eventually the name for my new guitar. After some time I searched her out again, realizing a few odd synchronicities related to my songs and performances. Though I may have gone to her pages too often, I made a clear decision not to approach her "in real life", because I thought it could be trespassing. Later a f(r)iend of mine wanted to take me along to see her, for they had some business to deal with. This all happened on the day I'd give Virta magazine's (issue 8) final version to Unigrafia printing house. When we met her I froze and smiled in a foolish way, not saying anything or even introducing myself. She did not tell me anything, either, only introducing herself by name. They had a private discussion and as we left my f(r)iend accused me of stalking. Angry and ashamed, I tried in vain to tell him about "meaningful coincidences". The poem with her initials would be printed right after our meeting that never happened. Another reason behind this nonsense is that she really was the one who gave me the image of Tryst, a meeting (place) of lovers, already in 2003. She had been like a muse, and I never understood why or how it came to be that way. Because we had only met a few times, and pretty much nothing ever happened. "Well, you know what..." Poetry is like that.

Here is a fragment of the live journal, originally called Music for birds and bunnies / rabbits (I never could decide which one was better or worse, maybe they were equally good and bad):

11.11.18 More Blues and Jazz for the Beloved (God)mother, Hamina & 19.11.17 Grandfather's Home Blues / Military Music For The Godmother, Kirkkojärvi, Hamina I played for my godmother(s) again. I was asked for some more Cohen. But the other time was my own obsession. I had failed so miserably the night before, that I needed to prove myself I still got the blues and jazz kiss my ass going on strong enough.

18.11.17 Folk-Iltamat, Pub Albert, Kotka (w/ Tuukka Sandström) Another dis-aster date in Kotka city. I had met Sandström earlier that autumn, and we had songs to play. So he arranged a gig for us. Tuukka performed really well, singing his own songs in Finnish. When it was my turn, I couldn’t really hear myself. The man was in shape, the voice worked well and the memory, too. The guitar went out of tune half-way and the rest was like Vysotsky (except that it was Cohen). I was depressed for months after this. Though I had a real premonition, it still hurt like hell.

10.-11. & 17.11.17 Lit the Candle (Again), L.C. one year on, Hautajaismuistojuhlasoitot & Dress Rehearsal Rag Time(s), Tallinmäki, Hamina (w/ Tuukka Sandström)

25.7.17 Puutarhajuhlat (Födelsedagfest), Karjaa (w/ Lars Karlsson)

1.7.17 Hautajaismusiikkia, Kirkkojärvi, Hamina

25.3.17 Esteettinen Metamorfoosi, olohuonekonsertti, Espoo

24.7.16 Harjulan Iltasoitto, Kirkkojärvi, Hamina Disappointed in my performance the day before, I wanted to try again. The Lady of the Hat left early from the garden party, so I went and played a little concert in her living room. She gave me this hat I have been wearing, since the summer of 2000. It is my great grandfather's hat. This time the concert was good and everything worked. The lady knew her Cohen, and spoke a few words of wisdom about the music: to keep the magic alive, one has to play the songs quietly and with..…

23.7.16 120 Kesää / Puutarhajuhlat, Kirkkojärvi, Hamina (w/ Tomi Pekkola) My parents wanted to have a garden party to celebrate their 60th birthdays, hence the title "120 summers". There were a lot of people and I had to use electricity for the second time in a row. We built up a stage under an apple tree. It looked nice, but I didn't like the sound. We played a few songs with the Master of the Mandolin, Tomi Pekkola. And Love itself was even caught on a video clip. I played a lot of songs later, alone. After the first set list, when the equipment and myself were starting to warm up and the afternoon became evening, it started rolling. I didn't know anything about Cohen's new themes or Marianne, but those days the muse died and the poet followed her soon after. I wrote a poem in the end of July, and used a few lines that would fit in. This was also the time when I published the old scrap book (again), The Nameless TYM, which begins and ends with a quote taken from Love itself.

30.3.16 Pyhän Antoniuksen Tuli (julkaisujuhlat), Bar Loose, Helsinki (w/ Guggenheim projectz etc) There was a stage named after my (anti)hero Kari Peitsamo, and I got to perform there. This was like a dream coming true. I did not know about it, until I was making a soundcheck and noticed the sign on the wall: Kari Peitsamo stage. The happening was about Mika Pekkola's new book, Pyhän Antoniuksen Tuli. He asked me to come and play at the publishing party, and I could not say no. Read the book, follow the trail, see the crow with a host or two. It was Joan of Arc, Avalanche, Who by Fire and True Love. There were other (and better) artists, also. And there I was, talking about another great (anti)hero of my youth, Taneli Jarva, when I looked out the window of the bar and thought I saw him, with his family, walking on the other side of Anne street.

The rest of the live journal (2007-2014) could be read in Almost a lover for Leonard Cohen

"The Cathedral of Freiburg, Easter Monday 2009. I went searching for a path and found one, although it was not the path I was looking for. In the Black Forest the earth was green, by the road to the city a stream of water was flowing on, and the air in the sky outside the cathedral was uplifting. Inside, candles were lit and their fire warmed people's hearts. The path was my very own, not someone else's"

"A note paper for Strindberg, Hölderlin & Celan part III. Written in December 2009, there are all the necessary items a wanderer needs, from The Tree of Life diagram to the ladder and the question mark Celan wrote on Heidegger's guest book. The wind and the spirit blow into one for a moment, with some insanity and a Peter Deunov quote to save the day. No, I do not sell my Heidegger-Celan hopes."

From der Angstweg to Alexandria

Der Angstweg, or Ahdistuspolku, was half-way opened to the public in July 2017, in Sigvartsby, Hamina, where the library of Alexandria was found again a few years earlier (in January 2013). The path leads to a field nearby, and there one could hear the city church bells ringing. The library has a  collection of cultural and esoteric history, including a few gems. When I began collecting the books in the nineties, I did not know there would be a time when books have become rarities. Now the hour has come, and I am grateful that I continued the work during those lazy days when it seemed like a fool's quest. Alexandria has even received "a donation" from the library of Hamina; a collection of poetry books in Finnish. All the necessary items of cultural history are there to remind us of the past century's crazy or evil undertakings and erratic wanderings, from Hitler's Mein Kampf to Lenin's State and Revolution (in Finnish, among dozens of Marxist classics from the Soviet printing houses), and many things in between. Some hidden treasures balance the horrors; books like Pekka Ervast's Christosophisia peruskysymyksiä I-II and Friedrich Rittelmeyer's letters on Meditation (in Deutsch of course, dating from the times of crisis).

There are memories in the form of dedications, like the late Colin Wilson's The Outsider, eighth impression from 1956, with "warm regards". I met him at the library of Pasila in 2007, and he wondered where on earth did I get that book. And I still wonder, too. Even Aarni Kouta's less known Lusiferin kannel (signed by the maker) and Ristin tie are there. Showing the metamorphosis of a poet and thinker who was trying to get a hold of the higher spiritual truths opening in the darkness and light of the 20th century.

I have obtained a few priceless ones from the Sophia cultural centre in Kallvik, like John Meyendorff's classic Byzantine Theology, with a dedication from the writer himself to the Archbishop Paul of Finland, and other works by the Orthodox Masters. Alexandria is located in a private house, but who knows, it may be open to public some day. And it has been possible to loan books from there, since the very beginning.

Crossville skyline and all the romance

A view from our Kallvik balcony in 2012, hiding more than it reveals. The park hidden behind the trees is called Mustakivenpuisto (Blackstone park), and the sky belongs to Rastila (in English one could say Crossville). But it is a vague reference, because the houses visible are in Kallvik and only the horizon takes the watcher to another kind of X.X.X.X. There is also a meaningful shape drawn on the ground below, unseen to the eye in this picture, but concrete as logic in holy geometry, and referring to something truthful, as well (a triangle, with two open triangles on its sides and a square on top). I came to know what it feels like to be in somebody else's visionary dreams, taken into another individual's consciousness and plans. Ever since, I've been even more careful with my own poetry, and the ones I write about. God knows what's good and right for others.

The title reminds of a duet I like, with Johnny Cash giving a beautifully conservative edge to Bob Dylan's 1960s folk protest ways. I'm an old-timer and my views are like that, in part at least. For I've always been an oppressive kind of guy, too. I'd like to underline it's making the cross heavier. Maybe that's why I like to see them get (along) together, these differing views and times. We are on a forward march, and there is no going back. However, the spirit of truth.....

"Malta, Valletta, in October 2011. So, there is a right time and a right place for everything. If I had gone to Malta before, I would not have liked it the way I did. Had I gone later, it may not have been the same, either. This was the hour for that place. Maybe there will be another time. But some things will never change. These photos are nothing but stills from the sunshine and the romance of Malta."

"There is a whole story and quite a different reality behind them as well. During the fall of that year I thought I was going to break down. But somehow I didn't. This was not the first time I've been in trouble, but it made it to my all time top three list of 'breakdance'."

"Courage in Malta, with my back against the wall. I stood there in the city built by gentlemen for gentlemen, as Walter Scott so eloquently put it. Churchill said Malta must be kept no matter what. Hitler wanted the island at all cost, but the fortress witheld. I saw Francis Ford Coppola's film Youth without youth just a few weeks before my journey. For blessed Gerard."

The three romantic quotes above were written and published on this very site a long ago, then taken out and now replaced, as time ever flows on and on, in a circle, a line and even beyond itself. Pictures taken by Antti Filppu and Laura Vilva.

Terveisiä pahasta paikasta

Teksti on alunperin kirjoitettu ja julkaistu lokakuussa 2006 (englanninkieliset osat kirjoitettu 2005).

Kesäinen ilta Helsingissä 2004. Lähes tyhjässä elokuvateatterissa näytettiin Bernardo Bertoluccin ”The Dreamers”.
Viime lokakuussa (2005) ilmestyi The Black Leaguen levy A Place Called Bad.

Noihin aikoihin olin alkanut kääntää Vysotskia suomeksi.

Kuulitteko!?

A LOSER WINS (excerpts from TBL forum, 2005) / AMF: "I should win because I don't have any god damn money to buy that Place Called Bad and I have all the other records of this extraordinary league of g-men. And because I am always pissed (off, on, in / out whatever), and I am always broke, and I'm pissed and I'm broke. And because you fucken Jarva Bastard stole my idea for a song, about bastard's difficulties of getting thru. Now I'll have to change the title of that song of mine, and it's your fault. So it would be just fair (and foul) to give this one lousy beggar a helping hand and a chance to get to hear some of the new sanguinary blues you have composed. Otherwise I'll just have to stick to the Muddy Waters collection from that Johnny Winter era, end-of-seventies kind of groove. And that ain't bad, but it ain't always "good" either to listen to the same old song every day, you know....... "

"A bonus winner has been handpicked by Taneli Jarva himself. The user called AMF should immediately contact me via e-mail so we can send you also a special prize package."

A PLACE CALLED BAD rated on a scale of 0-10 beers. AMF: "'I'll give 8 out of ten beers, even though I don't think this is the kind of album that should be weighed like that (don't know if any album is....). It is good, not "bad". Some of the songs opened up right away, some of them insisted some more volume and some repeated listens before the groove and the doomsday blues started rolling. Best album from this league since Ichor? Hard to say, all albums have their own pathways and their own sounds. Lyrics got it all right, this Kaurismäki-Johnny Cash styled sense of pity and compassion for the wrecked and the worn out ones is something that the music pissness needs, methinks Ichor was a perfect album already but it didn't have the same amount of durch Mitleid wissend as this one has (and Ichor is one of the best "popular music records" ever made in Finland, its only serious problem being the loss of pity!)."

The Moves I-VII

Dressed rehearsal rags called Thirst (or Antti Filppu and Ilkka Kosunen) performing at the secret White Room in December 2007, on their initiative concert, for an audience of one male and one female. There were many songs chosen, from Leonard Cohen and Hank Williams to Agustin Barrios. Johann Sebastian Bach's Chaconne was played as an encore. The mic was well plugged in fair trade Oke banana box.

It seems we / I have used various and popular cult(ure) forms such as "bands" etc in a way and with a content that is perhaps more related to the philosophy and history of the so-called high, contemporary or even performance art. Pop culture is less than 100 years old, and its time has gone already. The high culture began to lo[o]se in the sixties as is well documented (there are many quotations for that, but for historical reasons I will refer to Leonard Cohen, who sang about the sixties and the changing of poetry into pop songs - now, in the 21st century, it has all begun to change into something else). It is common knowledege that "high" and "pop" cultures have lost their borderlines long ago and the world is full of various crossover works having characteristics from both. But in our / my work(s) we / I have been dealing with some of the underlining themes behind a common thread that is found everywhere.

What I am referring to is "quite simple and rather too complicated" at the same time. And no one has a copyright to these themes. For lack of a better word and to honour performance artists like Joseph Beuys (and our own DIY-master, Erkki Pirtola), here I have decided to call these works of art, simply, THE MOVES, in no particular order:

I) THE FIRST MOVE:
THIRST & The Great Never Heard Of TOUR
(Secret White Room 2007 - Hamina Tattoo 2014)
Document / Site "Almost a Lover for Leonard Cohen"
(In pop Cult form, see Vaaka)

II) THE SECOND MOVE:
THE NAMELESS, THE YOUNG MEN
Document / Site "Handmade rock art"

III) THE THIRD MOVE:
OMNIUM GATHERUM (late 2000 - early 2006)
Document / Site "Wastrel coming home"

IV) THE FOURTH MOVE:
YE COLD HANDS: THE HOMECOMING
Document / Site "Ye Cold Hands: The Homecoming"
(In Outlaw booklet form, see Vaaka)

V) THE FIFTH MOVE:
VIRTA ZINE (Alternative journalism)
Document / Site "Virta-lehti"

VI) THE SIXTH MOVE:
SHRINES (Educational ambient)
Document / Site "Akritas 2007"

VII) THE SEVENTH MOVE:
LYRICS / FLOR & BLANCHEFLOR
Document / Site "Mythic poetry"

So, the MOVES have been social in one way or another, and this is only my point of view. It may not concern the whole project or band itself. By the same token, it does not prevent me from stating this. And the social sculpture of Beuys is very much and always a part of it, we are individuals and social beings in a spiritual reality. I still owe my gratitude to everyone responsible. You made it real for me, and I have made these themes for you, too. Forgive me, if this doesn't sound right. But it's the truth, and nothing......

I have to confess the traditional forms of "performance art" have never appealed to me that much, I have been more interested in the hidden meanings and spirit (or structural side). And these MOVES have needed years or even decades to be formed. They have taken place in a historical way, not so much as a performance that happens in a certain place at a certain time. In a sense, this is what makes them new. THE SECOND MOVE has needed over 20 years (with only a handful of events / gigs and three or four "records" to be heard, but it has been an ongoing process with quite visible results as well). Some other MOVES have been done in 5-7 years. They have needed a series of points or events to unfold "historically", and this unfolding may have happened through single "performances" that resemble contemporary art / popular culture. THE FIRST MOVE is a bit like that. Then there are more literal MOVES that have been made in and for the literary circles. With these words, I am merely stating what has actually happened (and everyone could see for themselves what has been said before in interviews etc - like these apologies, everything moves in the same flow, at least, well, more or less?).

I MOVE: Where does "live performance" change into something else, or the other way around? The questions about (un)officiality, audience / performer etc. From a concert played for birds and rabbits to performing on a real music festival, and everything in between. The Russian bard culture versus the American pop culture. These are also anthropological questions and problems.

II-IV & VI MOVES: Where is the line in-between "a real band" and a musico-philosophical project, and why? How about the changing of band names, constantly, in order to prevent any kind of success in the material sense of the word? Or, could there be other reasons for doing that? What does it all mean, and where does it lead us? There are also numerous other questions and themes concerning these bands / projects (about staging and music theater forms, disco dancing in death metal etc), as[s] documented in the MOVES II-IV & VI.

V MOVE: This move concerning our Virta culture magazine is debatable and questionable, but it could be mentioned here, nevertheless. There may be different views about the whole project, but the same thing applies to all the bands as well. So, I have been part of this (together with Mikko Nenonen, Matti Rautaniemi and Tuukka Vartiainen, and many others), and my role has changed during the years. The idea and the name "Virta" came up in a conversation I had with Olli Koski already in 2000 (he invented it, and yes, he is the legendary economist). Where is the line between "true" and "false" journalism, and why?

VII MOVE: This one is the only quite literally conscious art work, and it has taken a lot of time, even more of strength, and most of whatever little money there ever was. Yes, I am exaggerating now, and purposefully so. Lyrics / Flor & Blancheflor was published in full colour with a real Finnish ISBN code, in 2013/2014, and it is the only Vaaka book officially available through internet (see AdLibris, Amazon etc). The price is close to terrible, and unfortunately I have not been able to decrease it. But the statement is what counts: where is the line between a real (published) book and something else, and why? For there are three different levels in Lyrics: 1) the handwritten original manuscript 2) the traditional printed bookform and 3) the electric, free copy. What is the line to be crossed, where a book becomes "real"? (Cf. in the old times all books were made by hand and they were single copies, and now we are living in a world where the printing machines have become antique - does not this open a new question concerning the origin and the birth of the BOOK itself?). I have also tried to promote handwriting as a therapeutic or pedagogical method. The Finnish Cultural Foundation has supported the making of this MOVE.

Writing it down for you, like it or not

This picture was taken by myself, sometime between the fall of 2008 and the rise of 2009, in Alppila. We lived in a small cave on the ground floor. It was really halfway inside the rock, below the street. The bookshelf shows you many of those introduced in an earlier post (see January 2008), but also some books not mentioned before. Like The Book of Sophia ("Sofia"), begun in the summer of 2007, and still not quite finished. Or The Book of Goetheanum from 2008, which I have kept waiting. In the middle of the back row, with black covers, is The Book of Angels & Men ("Enkelit ja Ihmiset"), brought to me by Jussi Matikainen from Old Riga in 2005. It was ready before Easter 2010. And on the left, front row, the small book lying there, called The Book of Koli, was thrown away in 2011. I have saved the notes elsewhere. Below it, one can see another very small Book, named after Patmos. I bought it in Tallinn just before our visit to Greece in 2007, and it worked as a travel note book. From September to October 2007 I also used it as a note book on a lecture series. After graduating from the University of Helsinki (the department of cultural anthropology) I began another kind of study, or actually, continued on a path I had found long ago, before even getting into the world of anthropology. The questions I had been asking since the nineties were making way, with some answers, to many new questions................................

O chosen love, O frozen love
O tangle of matter and ghost
O darling of angels, demons and saints
And the whole broken-hearted host
Gentle this soul
-L.C. / The Window

The esoterical themes may sound radical and looney-tooney, but I have tried to maintain a scientific and even sceptic (in the good sense of the word) approach to the topics. It is an unfortunate truth that these themes have been neglected and despised in the official scientific fields of research, and no good will come out of that. Many bad things have already happened because of the attitude problems in the academic world. It is crucial that honest research is being done also concerning the spiritual. But I still have faith in the old-fashioned humanist tradition, too, at least if it is understood in a certain way. The questions are there, and they are truthful as can be. For the real answers, there are no standards in any of the official sciences today. We need to save these quest(ion)s for the centuries to come.

"Years ago I made the last changes to a certain book (Parsifal ja Klingsorin Maaginen Puutarha, 2007). But I still found myself editing. All through the years I had been finishing the work every once and in a while, trying to get it all together, including a few quotes to the original sketch (that could be found in the library of Helsinki university in one copy). But the version published in 2013 is still the same book, with some details and lines added or cleared out. If you want to buy / see the text, go to Vaaka bookstore (and my own KAFENEION archives). Available in Finnish only. But there are many long quotes in English, so one can try to guess what it is all about. Still, I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone, Finnish speaking or not. It is a crossover of anthropology, aesthetics (philosophy), comparative religion, anthroposophy and new age. I have notes and fragments for an English essay on the same subject, to be published later. Or maybe not, who knows."

(All these texts were written earlier, but moved here to replace other fragments gone, like it has been with so many of them during these years.)

Valvojan Rukous, Vanhoja Runoja

Kuvan maalasi / otti Laura Vilva.

Kuljettuamme ensin Swedenborgin jalanjäljissä Upsalan Tuomiokirkkoon asti, palasimme kaupunkiin, jonka mukaan Gary Lachman on antanut hänelle arvonimen The Magus of Stockholm. Katariinan kirkosta löysimme Martin Lönnebon rukoushelmet Frälsarkransen ja niiden käyttöoppaan englanniksi. Se alkaa Kreikan saarilta ja noudattaa pitkälti alkuperäistä kreikkalaista rukousnauhaperinnettä, tosin moderniin ruotsalaiseen tyyliin sovellettuna, vapaasti ja yksilöllisesti, kirkollisten oppien raja-aitojen tuolle puolen ulottuen. Yllä olevan kuvan otti Laura Vilva."

Sitaatti on peräisin vuodelta 2014.

The Temple of the Grail

The boardgame was designed by Antti Filppu and made by Veijo Pekkola in 1999. The (un)finishing lines were drawn in December 2006. I have tried several different rules for the game during the years. But it seems "the Temple of the Grail" will not be played at all. The whole point was the creation process itself, to have the style of chess and the romance of chivalry in it, reminding of the child's imagination and the adult's taste as well. References to the tradition of sacred geometry are all too visible, but they were not all meant to be there, initially. And the same could be said about the crossroads on this wood, the different views on the Grail theme that can be seen by those "who have eyes to see".

Straight lines form gateways, while the circle has been squared. There are 22 letters or numbers in the sides, with the first and the last interchangeable in a way. This makes it compatible with the Greek ideas concerning 21/3 year phases, the Hebrew alphabet and the Tarot system as well. Choose your own. It works together with my collection of poetry, Flor & Blancheflor. See the Lyrics for more pictures of the boardgame.

My little sister brought me the knight in the middle of this picture (in the nineties already), and I can't forget but I don't remember who said the figure is not a man but a woman. And not just any woman, but the Maid of Orleans herself, Joan of Arc. Pictures taken by Antti Filppu. Below is the master of geometry himself in 2007.

Master Pythagoras of Samos, who "neither affirms nor conceals but indicates" like the Delphi's Oracle, and "who handed down to us the tetraktys (1+2+3+4), containing the source and root of eternal nature". For the Harmony of the Spheres is "the bond uniting gods and mortals". (See Carmen Aureum, or J.Thom's Pythagorean Golden Verses).

"Few understand the deliverance from their troubles. Such is the fate that harms their minds: like tumbling stones they are borne hither and thither, suffering endless miseries. For a deadly innate companion, Discord, has injured them unawares. This one must not promote, but withdraw and flee from it. Father Zeus, you would surely deliver all from many evils, if you would show all... "

"But take courage, for mortals have a divine origin, to whom Nature displays and shows each sacred object. If you have any share in this, you will master what I command you by means of a thorough cure, and you will save your soul from these sufferings."
-excerpts from The Golden Verses

On the Way to Sophia / Pyhä Viisaus

Kallvik area in Vuosaari is also known as "the Miami of Finland", because its architects went to Florida to take influences and to learn some lessons in city planning. Many of the streets and houses actually do remind a bit of Miami style, with the pastel shades and everything. But Kallvik hides another kind of reality, too. These pictures were taken by Antti Filppu on a romantic stroll in 2013.

Kallvik used to be the place where SuomiFilmi came to shoot many of its nature scenes. Situated by the end of a metro line, reached after a short walk, there is a haven waiting for the city pilgrim who makes it this far. Beginning at the strange-looking Black Stone's Park, one will see how the scenery changes with every step, slowly, to a different kind of atmosphere. Finally, there is a forest path with old and tall pine trees and a beautiful seascape, not unlike the ancient Byzantine paths found in the Greek islands. Kallistos Ware told us a few years ago on his visit to Sophia cultural centre, that "who ever does not love trees, does not love Christ", quoting once again his old teacher, saint Amphilocius of Patmos.

Kulttuurikeskus ja kokoushotelli Sofia sijaitsee Vuosaaren Kallvikissa. Hagia Sofian kappelin lattia on peräisin Helsingin Taidemuseon seitsemän vuoden takaisesta ikoninäyttelystä. Kuviot noudattavat Kreikan Athos-vuoren luostareiden vastaavia.

Kristus on Sofian yläpuolella. Kuvat Antti Filppu.

Viime vuosi(satoi)na "vaihtoehtopiireissä" on puhuttu Sofiasta kokonaan Kristuksesta erillisenä hahmona, jolloin jumalattaren itsenäistä ja esi-kristillistä kulttia on haluttu korostaa. Harhaoppiseksi julistettu nk. sofiologinen koulukunta vei  ajattelunsa mielikuvituksellisten polkujen kautta. Pyhän Hengen ja Sofian yhteisistä piirteistä olisi kuitenkin hyvä puhua. (Uskontunnustuksessa mainittu Kyrios eli Herra tavallaan kaikuu myös toiseen enkelihierarkiaan kuuluvien olentojen nimessä Kyriotetes eli Herraudet, jotka tunnetaan "viisaudenhenkinä"; kansanomaisemmin ilmaistuna, herramaiset piirteet kohtaavat naisellisen viisauden tällä olemisen tasolla, puhumattakaan mystisen Pyhän Kolminaisuuden olemuksesta, joka on kaikkien hierarkioiden yläpuolella ja taustalla). Filosofian esoteeristen virtojen jääminen kirkollisten keskustelujen ulkopuolelle on lisännyt etäisyyttä jumalatarkultteihin, vaikka mahdollinen yhteys löytyi jo sata vuotta sitten. Kyse on mysteeriteistä.

Taistelu!
Keskity siihen!

Snellman-korkeakoulun hengessä

Snellman-korkeakoulun päärakennus "Taidetalo" Helsingin Jollaksessa. Radikaalina vaihtoehtona aloittanut, usein hippi-liikkeen piiriin kuuluvaksi leimattu steinerpedagoginen koulutuskeskus perustettiin vuonna 1980, jolloin sitä kutsuttiin Henkisen kasvun Snellman-korkeakouluksi. Nykyisin siellä opetetaan mielestäni joskus liiankin varovaista linjaa noudattaen. Yhteistyötä on tehty mm.

Sellaista elämä on. Kaiken kaikkiaan on turha pohtia, kannattiko minun tulla tänne vai oliko tämä ajanhukkaa, sillä oppia sai koko rahan edestä monessakin mielessä.
